The digital realm has become a fertile ground for new forms of criminal activity, with AFP Commissioner Krissy Barrett highlighting the emergence of "crimefluencers." These online predators, often young individuals themselves aged between 17 and 20, form decentralized networks that glorify crime and are motivated by anarchy and causing harm. Their primary targets are pre-teen and teenage girls, whom they groom and coerce into performing serious acts of violence against themselves, their siblings, others, or even their pets. The methods employed by these networks often involve a "twisted type of gamification," where perpetrators gain status within their groups by providing videos of self-harm or other graphic content. This alarming trend underscores the unique vulnerabilities faced by younger generations online, where social media platforms can quickly transform into breeding grounds for bullying, sexual exploitation, and radicalization. Research indicates that nearly two-thirds of Gen Z teens and young adults across various countries have been targeted by online "sextortion" schemes, including "catfishing" and hacking incidents where personal imagery is stolen and used for blackmail.
