Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalized Friday with abdominal pain while on a political trip in northeastern Brazil. The conservative leader's ongoing health issues stem from a 2018 stabbing during his presidential campaign.
Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2022, was in Santa Cruz, a small city in Rio Grande do Norte, when he began experiencing severe discomfort. He was subsequently transported by helicopter to a hospital in Natal, the state capital. Doctors reported his condition as stable, with no immediate need for surgery.
The former president has a history of abdominal problems dating back to September 2018, when he was stabbed at a campaign event prior to the presidential election. He attributed the issue to complications in his small intestine resulting from the surgeries he underwent after the 2018 attack.
Bolsonaro's hospitalization coincides with his efforts to maintain a presence in Brazilian politics. He was embarking on a political tour across Brazil's northeast, promoting his party's right-wing agenda. However, his political future faces uncertainty.
Brazil's Supreme Court has ruled that Bolsonaro must stand trial, accused of attempting to overthrow the government following his electoral loss in 2022. He is also barred from running for office until 2030 due to falsely casting doubt on the credibility of Brazil's electoral system.
