Jair Bolsonaro Hospitalized with Abdominal Pain

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalized Friday with abdominal pain while on a political trip in northeastern Brazil. The conservative leader's ongoing health issues stem from a 2018 stabbing during his presidential campaign.

Bolsonaro, who served as president from 2019 to 2022, was in Santa Cruz, a small city in Rio Grande do Norte, when he began experiencing severe discomfort. He was subsequently transported by helicopter to a hospital in Natal, the state capital. Doctors reported his condition as stable, with no immediate need for surgery.

The former president has a history of abdominal problems dating back to September 2018, when he was stabbed at a campaign event prior to the presidential election. The attack resulted in significant blood loss and multiple surgeries. As a result, Bolsonaro has been in and out of hospitals since the incident.

Since the stabbing, Bolsonaro has undergone at least four surgeries, including the placement and later removal of a colostomy bag. These procedures have left him susceptible to intestinal disorders. According to his medical team, the current abdominal pain is related to long-term complications from those surgeries.

While hospitalized, Bolsonaro posted a message on social media, stating that his condition was stable and improving. He included a photo of himself in a hospital bed, giving a thumbs up, with medical tubes and electrodes visible. He attributed the issue to complications in his small intestine resulting from the surgeries he underwent after the 2018 attack.

Bolsonaro's hospitalization coincides with his efforts to maintain a presence in Brazilian politics. He was embarking on a political tour across Brazil's northeast, promoting his party's right-wing agenda. However, his political future faces uncertainty.

Brazil's Supreme Court has ruled that Bolsonaro must stand trial, accused of attempting to overthrow the government following his electoral loss in 2022. He is also barred from running for office until 2030 due to falsely casting doubt on the credibility of Brazil's electoral system. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing and accuses the court of persecuting him.

Despite the legal challenges and health concerns, Bolsonaro appears determined to remain a relevant figure in Brazilian politics. He has been calling for his supporters who stormed the capital Brasilia after his 2022 election loss to be pardoned. His recent political tour and social media presence suggest he is hoping to make a comeback.

The former president's medical team is continuing to monitor his condition. While surgery is not currently indicated, doctors are conducting further tests to determine the best course of treatment. The timeline for his release from the hospital remains uncertain.

Bolsonaro's hospitalization underscores the lasting impact of the 2018 stabbing on his health. It also highlights the complex political landscape in Brazil, where the former president continues to wield influence despite facing legal challenges and health setbacks. His ability to navigate these obstacles will likely determine his future role in the country's political arena.
