The Malian armed forces and allied Russian paramilitary personnel retook the northern desert city of Kidal on Oct. 6, 2026. The capture followed the retreat of Tuareg separatists and allied jihadist fighters who held the city for nearly six months.

Malian military convoys and Russian Africa Corps fighters entered the city shortly before 1:00 p.m. without meeting ground resistance. Government spokesman Brigadier General Issa Ousmane Coulibaly announced the retaking of Kidal on state television. Staff officers said units arrived ahead of their projected timeline.

Forces launched the combined air and ground operation from Anefis, located about 100 kilometers south of Kidal. Most civilians fled the city ahead of the offensive. Departing residents reported that fewer than 100 civilians remained when troops arrived.

The Azawad Liberation Front carried out a planned withdrawal rather than fighting inside the city. Spokesman Mohamed Elmaouloud Ramadane's group said the retreat was an intentional step to preserve fighters and equipment from aerial bombardment.

The Tuareg group held Kidal alongside Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin, an al-Qaeda affiliate, after taking the city in late April. Mali's military general staff said the offensive aimed to dismantle insurgent logistics networks and restore regional security.

Kidal has served for over a decade as the symbolic center of Tuareg resistance against central authority in Bamako. Conflict began in 2012 when a northern rebellion was co-opted by jihadists linked to al-Qaeda and Islamic State affiliates.

Mali's military junta took power through coups in 2020 and 2021 before expelling French forces and United Nations peacekeepers. The regime then shifted operational ties from the private Wagner Group to Africa Corps under Russia's Ministry of Defense.

Malian and Wagner forces previously captured Kidal in late 2023. Insurgents retook the city in April 2026 in an attack that killed Defense Minister General Sadio Camara. Government troops also suffered recent losses, including 50 soldiers killed near Anefis and over 100 dead at Dioura.

Security analysts Beverly Ochieng and Rida Lyammouri said retaking the city aids junta morale and Africa Corps standing. However, they said the operation does not end the northern rebellion.

The Malian government said Tuesday night that it is consolidating positions to deploy civilian administrators and public services. Meanwhile, Malian and Russian columns are sweeping rural zones while insurgent forces remain mobilized in surrounding desert terrain.
