Tragedy in the Maldives: Bodies of Four Italian Divers Recovered, Rescue Effort Claims Another Life

MALÉ, Maldives – The serene waters of the Maldives, a renowned diving paradise, have become the site of a profound tragedy following the discovery of four Italian divers' bodies within a treacherous underwater cave system in Vaavu Atoll. This grim development comes days after five Italian nationals went missing during a cave diving expedition, an incident that also tragically claimed the life of a Maldivian rescue diver. The search and recovery efforts have been marked by immense difficulty due to the extreme depths, complex underwater geology, and challenging weather conditions.

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed Monday that rescuers had located the bodies of the four divers, who were believed to be deep inside the cave system near Alimathaa Island, approximately 100 kilometers south of the capital, Malé. This discovery follows the recovery of a fifth Italian diver's body earlier in the week. The incident, now considered the deadliest single diving accident in the Maldives' history, has prompted dual investigations by Maldivian and Italian authorities into the circumstances surrounding the ill-fated dive.

The Fateful Expedition

The five Italian divers embarked on their expedition from the luxury liveaboard vessel, the "Duke of York," on Thursday, May 14, 2026. Their objective was to explore underwater caves in Vaavu Atoll, a region known for its strong currents, deep channels, and pristine reefs, attracting both recreational and advanced divers. The group failed to resurface as expected, prompting an immediate search operation by the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) Coast Guard.

Early reports indicated that the divers were attempting to explore caves at a depth of around 50 to 55 meters (approximately 164-180 feet). This depth significantly exceeds the recreational diving limit in the Maldives, which is strictly capped at 30 meters (98 feet). The discrepancy between the official limit and the dive's actual depth is a central focus of the ongoing investigations.

Among the deceased was Gianluca Benedetti, a diving instructor and operations manager for Luxury Yacht Maldives and Albatros Top Boat. His body was the first to be recovered on Friday, May 15, found inside the cave system at a depth of about 60 meters. The four other divers, all connected to the University of Genoa, have been identified as Monica Montefalcone, a 51-year-old professor of ecology and marine biologist; her 23-year-old daughter Giorgia Sommacal, a biomedical engineering student; Muriel Oddenino, a research fellow; and Federico Gualtieri, a marine biology graduate. The University of Genoa expressed its deepest condolences, clarifying that while Professor Montefalcone and Ms. Oddenino were in the Maldives on an official scientific mission, the fatal cave dive was undertaken privately.

A Perilous Rescue and a Tragic Loss

The recovery mission for the missing divers was fraught with danger. On Saturday, May 16, Staff Sergeant Mohamed Mahudhee, a member of the Maldives National Defence Force Coast Guard diving unit, died after being rushed to a hospital with suspected decompression sickness. Mahudhee was part of an eight-member rescue team deployed during the recovery operation. Maldivian government spokesperson Mohamed Hussain Shareef stated that the team surfaced from their dive to realize Mahudhee was no longer with them. Other divers immediately returned underwater, finding him unconscious. His death underscores the extreme risks associated with deep and complex underwater recovery operations, especially within uncharted cave systems. Maldivian President Mohamed Muizzu expressed profound sorrow over Mahudhee's death, emphasizing the difficulty and inherent dangers of the mission.

Rough weather conditions, including strong winds and high seas, had initially hampered search and rescue efforts following the divers' disappearance. A yellow weather warning had been issued for the area on the day of the dive. The inherent complexities of cave diving, characterized by features such as depth, silt accumulation leading to "silt out" (zero visibility), and overhead confinement without direct ascent to the surface, make such environments exceptionally hazardous. Expert opinion suggests that disorientation within the intricate coral architecture and potential strong currents could have contributed to the tragedy.

Ongoing Investigations and Safety Concerns

The Maldives Ministry of Tourism has suspended the operating license of the "Duke of York" liveaboard indefinitely as a precautionary regulatory measure pending the outcome of the investigation. Both Maldivian and Italian authorities are actively investigating the incident, seeking to determine the exact cause of death and how the group came to be diving at such perilous depths, well beyond the country's recreational limits. The specific cave near Alimathaa has been temporarily closed as the investigation proceeds.

While the Maldives remains a popular and generally safe destination for recreational diving, this incident highlights the critical importance of adhering to safety protocols, respecting depth limits, and exercising extreme caution in specialized diving activities like cave exploration. The arrival of Finnish deep and cave diving experts on Sunday to assist with recovery efforts, following the suspension of searches due to Mahudhee's death, marked a renewed push to retrieve the remaining bodies from the third section of the cave, the furthest from the entrance.

The tragic loss of five Italian divers and a dedicated Maldivian rescue diver serves as a stark reminder of the unforgiving nature of deep-sea environments and the inherent risks that accompany even well-planned expeditions when conditions turn adverse or safety boundaries are pushed. The recovery of the remaining bodies and the conclusions of the official investigations are awaited as the international diving community mourns these significant losses.
