Zimbabwe Tycoon Wicknell Chivayo Dies In Helicopter Crash
The deaths eliminate one of the ruling party's most visible financial patrons while raising questions over the high-profile energy contracts held by his company.

Zimbabwean businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife died when a private helicopter crashed east of Harare on Wednesday evening. The crash occurred in the Marondera Rural district, about 70 kilometers from the capital. The aircraft was carrying four passengers and two pilots. Authorities said there were no survivors.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa confirmed the deaths, describing the couple as deeply philanthropic. Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the deaths to state broadcaster ZBC. He said relatives were devastated by the development.
Government spokesperson Nick Mangwana reported that the flight went down around 5 p.m. local time. National police spokesperson Paul Nyathi said six occupants were aboard the helicopter. State media reported that the flight originated in Chikomba, where the family had been constructing a rural home. It crashed at Kudenga Farm about 40 minutes after departure.
Chivayo founded Intratrek Zimbabwe, an infrastructure and energy enterprise. His company secured multiple state energy deals, including a contract valued at over $170 million for a 100-megawatt solar project in Gwanda. State power authorities had issued an official directive earlier in the month instructing the company to proceed with construction.
The businessman was widely recognized for his close relationship with the ruling ZANU-PF leadership. He frequently publicized donations of high-end vehicles and money to political allies, church groups and public personalities. He also shared photographs of private dinners with several African heads of state.
Police said investigators have been deployed to the crash site to determine what caused the accident and to formally identify the remaining victims.
