A single hyperscale data center can consume as much electricity as 50,000 homes, placing significant strain on existing power infrastructure and contributing to spikes in energy costs for ordinary citizens.
Water consumption is another critical issue, particularly in regions already grappling with drought and limited freshwater resources. A large-scale AI data center can use up to 5 million gallons of water daily, a volume comparable to the daily consumption of a town with 10,000 to 50,000 residents. While some industry players are developing advanced cooling systems to reduce water usage, the cumulative impact of numerous such facilities still raises serious questions about long-term water supply and sustainability.

The footprint of data centers extends beyond utilities, affecting local quality of life in myriad ways. Residents frequently report significant noise pollution from the constant hum of cooling systems, which can be highly disruptive to residential areas. Concerns also arise regarding the generation of electronic waste due to the rapid obsolescence and frequent upgrading of hardware within these centers.
Furthermore, the sheer physical scale of data centers often necessitates the conversion of valuable farmland and exerts pressure on local infrastructure and public services.
