German Airport Strikes Cause Travel Chaos, Disrupting Hundreds of Thousands

Travelers across Europe and beyond are facing major disruptions as a widespread strike has brought several German airports to a standstill Monday. The Verdi trade union called for a 24-hour strike, impacting an estimated half a million passengers and leading to the cancellation of thousands of flights. The strike stems from an ongoing dispute over pay and working conditions for public sector workers and ground handling staff.

Widespread Disruptions Across Germany

The strike has affected nearly all major German airports, including key hubs such as Frankfurt, Munich, Stuttgart, Cologne/Bonn, Dusseldorf, Dortmund, Hanover, Bremen, Hamburg, Berlin-Brandenburg, and Leipzig-Halle. Verdi, the union organizing the strike, is demanding an 8% wage increase, or at least 350 euros more per month, for the 2.5 million public sector workers it represents. In addition to the wage increase, the union is also seeking three additional days off per year and higher bonuses for employees in demanding roles. They are also asking for a €200 monthly increase for apprentices and interns, and a new “My Time” account to offer employees greater scheduling flexibility.

Christine Behle, Deputy Chair of Verdi, stated that the union was "forced to take this action because employers have yet to present an offer or show any willingness to meet our justified demands." She emphasized the crucial role airport workers play in ensuring the smooth operation and safety of air travel, arguing that they deserve fair wages and better working conditions.

Employers have deemed the union's demands unaffordable, with further negotiations scheduled for later this month. The current strike represents an escalation in the ongoing labor dispute.
