Israel Claims Control of Key Gaza Corridor, Signaling Expanded Offensive

GAZA CITY, April 12, 2025 – The Israeli military has announced it has seized control of a crucial corridor in southern Gaza, a move that further isolates the city of Rafah and signals a potential expansion of military operations throughout the war-torn territory. The announcement by Defense Minister Israel Katz comes as Hamas leaders are in Cairo for ceasefire talks with Egyptian mediators.

Morag Corridor Secured

Defense Minister Katz stated Saturday that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had completed its takeover of the Morag axis, a corridor that cuts across Gaza between Rafah and Khan Yunis. This action effectively turns the area between the Philadelphi Route, along the Egyptian border, and Morag into an Israeli security zone. Katz addressed residents of Gaza, stating that military operations would soon intensify and expand to other areas, urging them to evacuate combat zones.

The Morag Corridor is not the only corridor that has been constructed by the Israeli military during its war on Gaza. The Netzarim Corridor, a 6.5km (4-mile) road located south of Gaza City effectively cuts the Gaza Strip in two. The corridor was named after Netzarim, the last Israeli settlement to be closed in Gaza in 2005, under the then-Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's plan for Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.

Implications for Rafah

The takeover of the Morag Corridor effectively encircles Rafah, a city where hundreds of thousands of displaced Palestinians have sought refuge. The move raises concerns about the humanitarian situation in Rafah, as access to and from the city becomes increasingly restricted.

Robert Geist Pinfold, a lecturer in international security at King's College London, told Al Jazeera that while Israel says the creation of the Morag Corridor is purely operational and meant to constrain Hamas, it's actually part of a longer-term Israeli strategy to control Gaza from afar.

Ceasefire Talks Underway

The announcement of the corridor takeover coincides with a meeting in Cairo between Hamas leaders and Egyptian mediators aimed at achieving a ceasefire agreement. Hamas officials have expressed hope for "real progress" in the talks, which also aim to secure the release of hostages held in Gaza.

However, top Israeli officials, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, have repeatedly stated that the ongoing military assault is intended to pressure Hamas into releasing the remaining hostages. The timing of the corridor announcement could be interpreted as a way to increase pressure on Hamas during the negotiations.

Humanitarian Crisis Deepens

The ongoing conflict has created a dire humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Since a ceasefire collapsed in mid-March, renewed Israeli offensives have displaced hundreds of thousands of people. Gazans are struggling to find water as clean sources become increasingly scarce.

The Gaza Government Media Office says that Israel has deliberately disrupted the two Mekorot water pipelines east of Gaza City and in the central governorate, and also shut down the electricity line supplying the desalination plant in the Deir el-Balah area, leading to a complete halt in the production of desalinated water. The office also stated that more than 90 percent of the water and sanitation infrastructure has been destroyed. They have recorded more than 1.7 million cases of water-related illness, in addition to the deaths of more than 50 Palestinians, the majority of whom were children, due to dehydration and malnutrition.

Expanding Operations

In addition to the Morag Corridor, Defense Minister Katz indicated that the IDF is expanding its operations in other areas of Gaza, including northern Gaza. He stated that residents are evacuating Beit Hanoun and other neighborhoods, and that the security zone is being expanded, including in the Netzarim corridor.

The Israeli military also issued an evacuation order to residents in several areas east of Gaza City, prompting criticism from aid and rights groups who decry the orders as a form of ethnic cleansing.

The Israeli military's takeover of the Morag Corridor and the expansion of operations in other parts of Gaza mark a significant escalation in the conflict. While ceasefire talks are underway, the situation on the ground remains volatile, and the humanitarian crisis continues to worsen.
