Pop superstar Katy Perry is set to "shoot across the sky" today, embarking on a historic spaceflight aboard Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin New Shepard rocket. The mission marks the first all-female space crew since Valentina Tereshkova's solo flight in 1963, ushering in a new era for women in space exploration.
A Historic Launch
The Blue Origin Flight NS-31 lifted off from the company's launch site in West Texas at 8:30 a.m. Central Time. The spacecraft is expected to reach an altitude of over 62 miles (100 kilometers), surpassing the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. The entire flight, from liftoff to capsule touchdown, is estimated to last approximately 11 minutes.
Perry is joined by five other women on this groundbreaking mission: Lauren Sánchez, Jeff Bezos's fiancée; Gayle King, a television personality; Aisha Bowe, a former NASA rocket scientist and engineer; Amanda Nguyen, a civil rights activist; and Kerianne Flynn, a film producer. Sánchez selected the crew, expressing her desire to fly with "women who are making a difference in the world and who are impactful and have a message to send."
Aboard the New Shepard
The New Shepard rocket is a fully autonomous suborbital spacecraft designed for space tourism. The crew capsule can accommodate six passengers and features large windows for panoramic views of Earth and space. During the flight, the crew will experience several minutes of weightlessness, offering a unique perspective of the planet.

Blue Origin has been offering space tourism experiences since 2021, with the New Shepard rocket having flown 52 people to space prior to today's launch. Notable figures who have previously traveled with Blue Origin include William Shatner, the actor known for his role as Captain Kirk in Star Trek, and Michael Strahan, a former NFL star and television personality. Jeff Bezos himself was on the company's first human spaceflight in July 2021.
The company does not publicly disclose the price of tickets for these suborbital flights.
