Man Arrested After Arson at Pennsylvania Governor's Residence

HARRISBURG, Pa. – A 38-year-old Harrisburg man is in custody following an arson attack early Sunday morning at the Pennsylvania Governor's Residence, forcing Governor Josh Shapiro, his family, and guests to flee the mansion. The suspect, identified as Cody Balmer, faces a slew of charges including attempted murder, terrorism, aggravated arson, and aggravated assault.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. Sunday when Balmer allegedly scaled an iron security fence, evaded state troopers, and entered the residence before setting a fire. Governor Shapiro, his wife, their four children, two dogs, and another family who had celebrated Passover with them the previous evening, were awakened by state police and safely evacuated.
Fire Damage and Investigation
The Harrisburg Bureau of Fire responded to the scene and extinguished the blaze. The fire caused significant damage to the south side of the residence, particularly to a large room often used for entertaining and displaying art. Windows were shattered, and doors were charred. Yellow tape cordoned off an alleyway as investigators, including canine units, examined the scene. A section of the security fence appeared to have been cut.
Pennsylvania State Police Col. Christopher Paris confirmed Balmer's arrest at a Sunday evening news conference. He emphasized that the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are still working to determine the suspect's motive. Officials stated that Balmer had a "well laid out plan" and possessed homemade incendiary devices. He was reportedly inside the residence for approximately one minute before escaping and being apprehended nearby.
Shapiro's Response
Governor Shapiro addressed the attack at an afternoon news conference, expressing gratitude that his family and guests were unharmed. He condemned the violence, stating, "This type of violence is not OK. This kind of violence is becoming far too common in our society. It has to stop. We have to be better than this."
Shapiro, who is viewed as a potential White House contender for the Democratic Party in 2028, affirmed that the incident would not deter him from his duties. "If he was trying to stop me from doing my job, then I'll work harder," Shapiro said. He also stated that the attack would not prevent him from observing his faith.
Suspect's Background
While authorities have not disclosed a specific motive, social media posts allegedly belonging to Balmer have surfaced, revealing anti-Biden sentiments and images of rifles. The authenticity of these posts remains unverified.
Dauphin County District Attorney Francis Chardo said Balmer will be charged with attempted murder, terrorism, attempted arson, and aggravated assault.
Security Concerns and Support
The incident has raised concerns about security at the Governor's Residence, which is typically monitored by state troopers. Officials said that Balmer hopped over a nearly 7-foot-high iron security fence, eluding officers, before entering the home.
Shapiro said he had received pledges of help from the Department of Justice, the FBI, and the U.S. Attorney's office, as well as numerous messages of support from fellow governors and others.
Passover Celebration
The fire occurred on the first night of Passover, a Jewish holiday commemorating the liberation of the Israelites from slavery in ancient Egypt. Shapiro, who is Jewish, had shared a photo of his family's Seder table at the residence just hours before the attack. He noted that the fire was set in the same room where they had celebrated Passover with members of Harrisburg's Jewish community.
Vice President JD Vance posted on X, "Thanks be to God that Governor Shapiro and his family were unharmed in this attack."
Implications and Moving Forward
The arson attack on the Pennsylvania Governor's Residence has sent shockwaves through the state and the nation. It highlights the increasing polarization and political violence in contemporary society. While the investigation is ongoing, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the threats faced by public officials and the need for vigilance and security. Governor Shapiro has vowed to continue serving the people of Pennsylvania and to work towards a more peaceful and united society.
