Microsoft Reshapes Gaming Division Amidst Broader Layoffs, Xbox Faces "Most Significant Restructure"

REDMOND, WA – Microsoft has initiated a sweeping reorganization that includes the elimination of 4,800 positions across its global workforce, with its Xbox gaming division bearing the brunt of a historic overhaul. The technology giant announced Monday that 3,200 jobs, approximately 20% of the Xbox workforce, will be cut over the coming fiscal year, signaling a major strategic shift to boost profitability in an increasingly competitive and challenging gaming landscape.
The immediate impact of this restructuring saw 1,600 Xbox employees laid off on Monday, with the remaining reductions slated to occur over the next 12 months. Xbox CEO Asha Sharma, who took the helm in February, characterized the current state of the gaming business as "not healthy," citing operating margins that are "3-10 times lower than comparable platform and publishing businesses." Sharma further noted that game studios within the division have been losing 64 cents for every dollar invested, underscoring the urgent need for a "reset."
A Hard Reset for Xbox
The changes mark what Sharma described as "the most significant restructure in Xbox history." This strategic pivot moves away from a previous decentralized studio model towards a more centralized approach, prioritizing major franchises. As part of this comprehensive overhaul, four game development studios will be divested from Xbox, with a fifth entering a review process that could lead to its closure.
Compulsion Games, known for South of Midnight, and Double Fine Productions, creators of Psychonauts, will transition to independent studios. Both studios will retain their intellectual property and receive funding from Microsoft to support their next projects, allowing them to seek additional financing. Meanwhile, Ninja Theory, developer of Hellblade, and Undead Labs, behind State of Decay, are set to be sold to new, undisclosed owners. Agreements are in place to ensure ongoing development of projects like Senua and State of Decay 3.
French labor laws necessitate a consultation process for Arkane Lyon, the studio responsible for Dishonored and an upcoming Blade game, to review "potential strategic options." This process could result in a sale or further changes for the studio, following the closure of Arkane Austin in 2024. Despite these significant studio changes, Xbox has affirmed that no publicly announced first-party games are currently slated for cancellation.
Broader Implications Across Microsoft Gaming
The impact of the layoffs extends beyond the divested studios, with job reductions planned across various segments of Microsoft's gaming empire. This includes teams at Activision, Bethesda/ZeniMax, Blizzard, King, Mojang, and Xbox Game Studios. To streamline operations and enhance efficiency, Mojang, the studio behind Minecraft, and King, known for Candy Crush, will now report directly to Xbox CEO Asha Sharma.
The restructuring also involves a flattening of the organizational chart, reducing management layers from as many as 14 to no more than five. Additionally, Xbox plans to cut vendor spending by 50% and shift its focus towards the Game Pass subscription service, free-to-play titles, and mobile-driven programs. This strategic direction signals an intent to adapt to changing consumer behaviors and market demands in the gaming sector.
In a move to strengthen leadership, Helen Chiang, a veteran of Xbox who previously oversaw Mojang and the Minecraft franchise, has been promoted to the division's first-ever Chief Operating Officer. This leadership change, coupled with Sharma's vision, aims to steer Xbox back to profitability, with a projected return to growth by 2027.
Economic Pressures and AI Investment
These gaming-specific layoffs are part of a larger directive from Microsoft, which is eliminating approximately 2.1% of its total global workforce. The broader cuts also affect Microsoft's sales and commercial business divisions. Chief People Officer Amy Coleman indicated that the job reductions are a response to the need to revamp sales and consulting operations to keep pace with the rapidly evolving tech industry.
Microsoft's substantial investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure are a driving force behind these cost-cutting measures. While Coleman emphasized that the eliminated roles are "not being replaced by AI," she acknowledged that automation is reshaping work processes across the company, necessitating adaptation and new skill development from employees. The company has also been actively redeploying employees into new roles and utilized a voluntary retirement program to minimize the scale of forced layoffs.
The current round of reductions follows several previous instances of job cuts within Microsoft's gaming division. In January 2024, 1,900 staff were laid off, followed by 650 more in September 2024, and over 6,000 across the company in May 2025. These successive rounds highlight ongoing efforts to optimize operations and respond to market dynamics since the $69 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard in 2024.
Adding to the economic adjustments, Microsoft recently announced an increase in Xbox console prices, effective August 1, citing rising costs for storage and memory components in electronic devices. This move signals a broader industry trend of adjusting pricing to reflect production expenses.
Outlook for a Refocused Gaming Giant
The comprehensive restructuring at Xbox, driven by the new leadership of Asha Sharma, reflects a critical juncture for Microsoft's gaming ambitions. With a clear focus on improving profit margins, streamlining operations, and prioritizing core franchises, the company is attempting to adapt to a "severe hardware crisis" and a fiercely competitive market dominated by rivals such as Sony's PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. The divestment of studios and the internal reorientation underscore a commitment to strategic efficiency, with the ultimate goal of achieving renewed growth by 2027. The coming months will reveal the full impact of these changes on Microsoft's gaming future.
