Noida International Airport Unveiled: India's New Aviation Hub Takes Flight

JEWAR, Uttar Pradesh – Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the first phase of the Noida International Airport (NIA) in Jewar, marking a pivotal moment in India's aviation landscape and infrastructure development. The ambitious greenfield project, set to become the second international airport for the bustling National Capital Region (NCR), is poised to significantly decongest the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) in Delhi and transform regional connectivity. The inauguration ceremony, held amidst considerable anticipation, saw Prime Minister Modi undertake a walkthrough of the terminal building and address a large public gathering, underscoring the project's strategic importance for Uttar Pradesh and the wider nation.

The Noida International Airport is envisioned as a major international gateway, integrating Swiss efficiency with Indian hospitality, and is designed to elevate the travel experience while fostering economic growth in Western Uttar Pradesh. A New Aviation Gateway for the National Capital Region

The inauguration of Noida International Airport, often referred to as Jewar Airport, is the culmination of years of planning and strategic investment. Located in the Gautam Buddha Nagar district of Uttar Pradesh, this greenfield airport project represents a cornerstone of the government's infrastructure push. The decision to develop a second international airport for the Delhi-NCR region stemmed from the increasing passenger traffic and resultant congestion at IGI Airport, which necessitated an alternative to support the growing demand for air travel. The NIA aims to function as an integrated aviation system alongside IGI, collectively expanding passenger capacity and positioning the Delhi-NCR among leading global aviation centers.

The development of Phase I of the Noida International Airport has been executed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, involving an investment of approximately ₹11,200 crore. Yamuna International Airport Private Limited (YIAPL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Flughafen Zürich AG (Zurich Airport International AG), is responsible for the development, construction, and operation of the airport, in collaboration with the Government of Uttar Pradesh and the Government of India. This concession period commenced on October 1, 2021, and is slated for 40 years.

Scale, Features, and Advanced Infrastructure

Phase I of the Noida International Airport is designed to initially handle 12 million passengers per annum (MPPA). However, the project's master plan anticipates significant future expansion, with the capacity scalable up to 70 MPPA upon full development, and an eventual projection of 225 million passengers annually, potentially making it India's largest airport.

The airport features a 3,900-meter runway, specifically engineered to accommodate wide-body aircraft, enabling it to manage both domestic and international long-haul flights effectively. It is equipped with modern navigation systems, including an Instrument Landing System (ILS) on both ends and advanced airfield lighting, ensuring efficient, all-weather, and round-the-clock operations. The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) recently granted the aerodrome license for "all-weather operations" in March 2026, a crucial certification for navigating the region's diverse climatic conditions, including low-visibility periods.

Beyond passenger services, the Noida International Airport incorporates a robust cargo ecosystem. It includes a Multi-Modal Cargo Hub with an Integrated Cargo Terminal and dedicated logistics zones, designed to handle over 2.5 lakh metric tonnes of cargo annually, with an impressive expandability to approximately 18 lakh metric tonnes. This emphasis on cargo and logistics is expected to significantly boost the logistics sector and position Uttar Pradesh as a key contributor to India's export economy. A notable feature is India's first on-site Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) facility, further enhancing the airport's self-sufficiency and service capabilities.

The airport aims for a net-zero emissions goal, integrating renewable energy systems, water-efficient landscaping, and environmentally responsible construction practices. The design prioritizes natural daylight, optimized passenger movement, and energy-efficient systems, reflecting a forward-thinking approach to airport development.
