Pope Francis' Funeral Set for Saturday at St. Peter's Square

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The world prepares to bid farewell to Pope Francis, as the Vatican announced his funeral will be held on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. in St. Peter's Square. The ceremony will draw world leaders and faithful from across the globe to honor the life and legacy of the pontiff, who led the Catholic Church for 12 years.
Funeral Arrangements and Schedule
Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, Dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside over the funeral Mass. Patriarchs, Cardinals, Archbishops, and Bishops will concelebrate the Mass. Before the funeral, a public viewing will be held, starting Wednesday, in St. Peter's Basilica, allowing the faithful to pay their respects. Images captured on Monday showed Pope Francis lying in the chapel of the Domus Santa Marta hotel, flanked by Swiss Guards. The ritual to confirm his death, presided over by the Camerlengo, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, was also conducted.
Cause of Death and Final Testament
The Vatican revealed that Pope Francis, 88, passed away following a stroke that led to a coma and irreversible heart failure. In his final testament, the pontiff expressed his wish to be buried at the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome, rather than at St Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, where many previous popes are interred. He requested a simple burial "in the ground, without particular decoration" but with the inscription of his papal name in Latin: Franciscus.
Global Reactions and Tributes
News of Pope Francis' death has prompted an outpouring of grief and tributes from leaders worldwide. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed he would attend the funeral. U.S. President Donald Trump ordered that the American flag be flown at half-staff across public buildings, grounds, military posts, and naval stations as a mark of respect. King Charles also led tributes for the Pope.
The Conclave and the Future of the Church
Following the funeral, Cardinals will convene in Rome to begin the process of selecting Pope Francis' successor. The conclave, a meeting of the College of Cardinals, will be held to elect the next leader of the Catholic Church. The 135 Cardinals traveling to the Vatican to take part in the conclave will be lodged in the House of St Martha. The conclave's discussions will cover funeral expenses and any preparations Francis had requested for his funeral.
Pope Francis' Legacy
Pope Francis, originally from Argentina and the first pope from Latin America, led the 1.4 billion-member church since 2013. His papacy was marked by efforts to modernize the Church, focus on social justice issues, and promote dialogue with other religions. He addressed issues such as poverty, inequality, and climate change, often challenging the status quo and advocating for the marginalized. His emphasis on mercy and compassion resonated with many, while his reforms faced resistance from some within the Church. Pope Francis was hospitalized for several weeks in February after suffering from a bout of double pneumonia but returned to the Vatican in mid-March to recover.
The funeral on Saturday will not only be a moment of mourning but also a celebration of Pope Francis' life and a reflection on his contributions to the Catholic Church and the world. The event will be broadcast globally, allowing millions to participate in honoring the late pontiff.
