Russia Faces Pressure as Ukraine Agrees to U.S.-Brokered Ceasefire Plan

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia – The United States and Ukraine announced Tuesday that Kyiv is prepared to accept a 30-day ceasefire with Russia, placing significant pressure on Moscow to de-escalate the ongoing conflict. The announcement followed a series of high-level talks held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, signaling a potential shift in the trajectory of the war.

U.S. Resumes Aid to Ukraine After Ceasefire Agreement

In tandem with Ukraine's agreement, the U.S. government has pledged to immediately reinstate intelligence sharing and security assistance to Kyiv, reversing a previous suspension of aid. The Trump administration had halted this support last week in an attempt to encourage President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to engage in negotiations to end the war. This decision came shortly after a tense meeting between President Trump and Zelenskyy at the White House. The now-unfrozen military aid includes roughly $1 billion in equipment that was approved. The Trump administration has the authority to provide another $3.8 billion in aid but has not announced any further aid packages.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who spearheaded the U.S. delegation at the Jeddah talks, emphasized the importance of Russia's response. "The ball is now in their court," Rubio said. "We're going to tell them this is what's on the table. Ukraine is ready to stop shooting and start talking. And now it'll be up to them to say yes or no. If they say no, then we'll unfortunately know what the impediment is to peace here."

Details of the Ceasefire Proposal

The proposed ceasefire aims to establish a complete cessation of hostilities for 30 days, encompassing not only missile, drone, and bomb attacks but also all actions along the entire front line and in the Black Sea. The agreement allows for the possibility of extending the ceasefire through mutual consent of both parties.

While Ukraine has expressed willingness to adhere to the 30-day ceasefire, Russia's stance remains uncertain. Moscow has consistently rejected proposals to freeze the conflict along the current front lines, believing it holds a strategic advantage on the battlefield.

The U.S. initiative reflects President Trump's desire for a swift resolution to the conflict. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz stated that the Ukrainian delegation shares President Trump's vision for peace. Negotiators are reportedly delving into substantive details regarding a permanent end to the war, including long-term security guarantees for Ukraine.

However, concerns persist regarding the enforceability of any ceasefire agreement. Kyiv has repeatedly stressed the need for firm security guarantees from the U.S. and other partners, citing Russia's history of violating previous ceasefire agreements since 2014.

Oleksandr, a Ukrainian soldier, voiced concerns that a ceasefire would merely provide Russia with an opportunity to replenish its resources. "If there is a ceasefire, it would only give Russia time to increase its firepower, manpower, missiles and other arms. Then they would attack Ukraine again," he said.

Diplomatic Efforts Continue

Despite the challenges, diplomatic efforts are ongoing. Steve Witkoff, Mr. Trump's Middle East envoy, plans to visit Moscow to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Witkoff met with Putin for more than three hours in February. The U.S. hopes to persuade Russia to accept the ceasefire proposal and engage in meaningful negotiations.
