Tear Gas Attack at Hamburg's Miniatur Wunderland Injures Dozens

Hamburg, Germany - A tear gas attack at the Miniatur Wunderland, a popular tourist attraction in Hamburg, left 46 people injured Saturday. The incident prompted a large-scale emergency response and the evacuation of the building, which houses the world's largest model railway exhibition.
The incident occurred around midday when an unidentified individual released an irritant gas inside the Miniatur Wunderland, located in the city's historic Speicherstadt district. Visitors quickly began experiencing respiratory irritation, burning sensations in the throat, and watery eyes.
Emergency services were alerted, and a large contingent of firefighters and paramedics rushed to the scene. According to a police spokesman, 46 people sustained minor injuries as a result of the gas exposure. One person was transported to a hospital for further evaluation, while the remaining victims were treated at the scene by paramedics.
The Miniatur Wunderland was immediately evacuated, with approximately 1,000 people being led to safety outside the building. Firefighters ventilated the premises to clear the irritant gas.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident to determine the identity of the perpetrator and the motive behind the attack. Authorities confirmed that a tear gas canister was found inside the building.
The Miniatur Wunderland, a major draw for tourists visiting Hamburg, was only closed for about 30 minutes. After the ventilation was completed and authorities deemed the building safe, visitors were allowed to re-enter and resume their tours.
The Miniatur Wunderland is one of Hamburg's most popular attractions, drawing visitors from around the world. It features meticulously crafted miniature landscapes and railway systems spanning various countries and regions. The exhibition covers more than 1,600 square meters and includes over 17,000 meters of railway track. Earlier in March, the attraction celebrated its 25 millionth visitor.
Frederik Braun of the Miniatur Wunderland addressed the tear gas incident.
The attack raises concerns about security at public attractions and the potential for similar incidents in the future. Law enforcement officials are reviewing security protocols at the Miniatur Wunderland and other high-profile tourist destinations in Hamburg to prevent future attacks.
The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and preparedness in public spaces. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the attack to come forward and assist with the investigation.
