Tragedy Strikes San Francisco Bay: One Dead, Three Missing After Boat Sinks Near Alcatraz

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – A somber pall has fallen over San Francisco Bay after a boat carrying 20 individuals, mostly family members observing a memorial service, sank Tuesday afternoon near Alcatraz Island, leaving one person dead and three others missing. Sixteen people were rescued from the frigid waters, some requiring hospitalization, as a massive search-and-rescue operation was launched, continuing through the night in hopes of locating the unaccounted for.
The harrowing incident unfolded just after 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, when emergency services received a call reporting a vessel in distress approximately 600 yards off the iconic former prison island. Initial reports erroneously suggested a boat fire, but responding crews found no evidence of flames. Instead, they discovered a three-deck pontoon vessel, identified as the "Volare," almost entirely submerged with its motor still running and leaking fuel into the Bay.
The Calamity Unfolds on the Bay
The ill-fated voyage, originating near the St. Francis Yacht Club, was intended to be a solemn memorial service for a family. The 50-foot cabin cruiser, based out of Stockton, was carrying 20 adults when it reportedly began taking on water amidst "pretty windy, a little choppy" conditions in the Bay. Eyewitness accounts suggest rough seas may have contributed to the vessel overturning.
The rapidity of the sinking left little time for those on board. Captain Aaron Anfinson of the fishing vessel Bass-Tub, who was in the area, described being flagged down by another boater pointing to the sinking pontoon. By the time the Bass-Tub reached the scene, the vessel was rapidly submerging, prompting immediate rescue efforts from nearby civilian boats and later, official emergency responders.
Frigid Waters and an Intensive Search
The San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) and the U.S. Coast Guard spearheaded the multi-agency response, which included a police marine unit, divers, helicopters, and at least 11 vessels. Officers from the San Francisco Police Department's Marine Unit were among the first on the scene, pulling a man in "severe distress" from the water. Despite immediate CPR efforts, the man was later pronounced dead at Gas House Cove. In addition to the human tragedy, a dog that was onboard the boat also perished.
The rescue operation successfully pulled 16 individuals to safety. Three of the rescued suffered injuries, some sustained while jumping into the cold Bay waters, and were transported to local hospitals. They were reported to be in stable condition and expected to be released Tuesday night. The search for the three missing persons intensified as Tuesday evening progressed, with search areas extending to the open ocean on the western side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Rescue teams employed thermal imaging, tide prediction, and modeling to direct their exhaustive efforts, which were expected to continue throughout the night.
A Memorial Service Turned Tragedy
What began as a poignant gathering to honor a loved one tragically transformed into a scene of unimaginable horror and loss for the families involved. The close-knit nature of the group, predominantly family members, amplifies the community's grief and concern for those still missing. San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie underscored the gravity of the situation, stating, "This is an all-hands-on-deck search and, hopefully, rescue."
The swiftness with which the boat sank, coupled with the Bay's notorious cold temperatures, makes survival for extended periods challenging, though rescue crews remain resolute in their efforts. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable dangers that can arise on even seemingly calm waters.
Unanswered Questions and the Investigation Ahead
While rough seas have been cited as a potential factor in the sinking, the exact cause remains under investigation. The initial erroneous report of a fire adds another layer of complexity to understanding the sequence of events that led to the catastrophe. Authorities will meticulously examine the vessel, witness statements, and environmental conditions to determine precisely what caused the Volare to capsize and sink so rapidly.
The Bay Area community now holds its breath, awaiting further news from the ongoing search. This tragic event casts a long shadow over the waters of San Francisco, prompting reflection on marine safety and the profound impact of unexpected loss. As the search continues, families and friends of the missing cling to hope, while the city mourns the life lost and grapples with the devastating aftermath of a memorial service that ended in disaster.
