Trial Commences in Istanbul Over Tragic Deaths of German-Turkish Family

Istanbul, Turkey – A high-profile trial began today in Istanbul, drawing international attention as six defendants face charges related to the deaths of a Turkish-German family from Hamburg who perished during a holiday stay in November 2025. The four members of the Böcek family, including two young children, succumbed to what a preliminary forensic report suggests was chemical poisoning at a hotel in the Fatih district, transforming a family vacation into a somber legal battle for justice.

A Vacation Turned Tragedy

The Böcek family – 38-year-old Servet, 27-year-old Çiğdem, and their children Kadir Muhammet (6) and Masal (3) – traveled from their home in Hamburg, Germany, to Istanbul on November 9, 2025, for what was intended to be a memorable tourist visit. However, their stay at the Harbour Suites Old City hotel quickly turned dire. On November 13, 2025, the family began experiencing severe symptoms, leading to the deaths of the mother and both children. The father, Servet Böcek, initially placed in intensive care, tragically passed away days later on November 17. The sudden and inexplicable deaths sent shockwaves through both Turkish and German communities, prompting an immediate and extensive investigation by Turkish authorities.

Unraveling the Cause: From Food Poisoning to Chemical Exposure

Initial reports and investigations by Turkish prosecutors focused on the possibility of food poisoning, particularly after the family was reported to have eaten various popular street food dishes. However, a pivotal forensic report based on samples taken from the mother and children indicated that food poisoning was a "lower possibility" as the cause of death. The report instead pointed towards chemical poisoning as the primary suspect, suggesting that the family likely died due to exposure to toxic chemicals within the hotel environment. Turkish media reports further elaborated on this theory, indicating that a substance used for bed bug extermination in a ground-floor room might have permeated through a bathroom vent to the family's first-floor accommodation. This revelation led to the evacuation and sealing of the hotel, and the scope of the investigation broadened significantly.

The Defendants and the Charges

The Istanbul 30th Heavy Penal Court is presiding over the case, where six individuals now stand trial. Five of the defendants are currently in custody. Among those facing charges are a hotel official, Hakan Oğlak, and the owner of the pest control company, Serkan Kışı, along with Zeki Kışı, Doğan Cağferoğlu, Muhammad Moeen Ud Din Chishti, and Rüstemsha Batyrov. Prosecutors have requested substantial prison sentences for the accused. Five of the suspects – Serkan Kışı, Zeki Kışı, Doğan Cağferoğlu, Hakan Oğlak, and Muhammad Moeen Ud Din Chishti – face a request for 22 years and 6 months in prison each, on charges of "causing the death of multiple people with conscious negligence." The sixth suspect, Rüstemsha Batyrov, faces a request for 2 to 15 years in prison for "causing the death of multiple people with negligence." The indictment lists the Böcek family members as victims, with Servet Böcek's brother Mustafa Böcek and Çiğdem Böcek's father Mustafa Çelik named as complainants.

International Scrutiny and Search for Justice

The tragic incident and subsequent trial have garnered significant attention from Germany, with the German Foreign Ministry closely monitoring the investigation. The deaths of the Böcek family have fueled debates about holiday safety in Turkey and prompted heightened diplomatic scrutiny, especially given the dual nationality of the victims. German officials have affirmed that the consul general in Istanbul is maintaining active discussions with Turkish authorities to ensure a swift and comprehensive clarification of the case. The Council of Forensic Medicine (ATK) has stated that definitive conclusions regarding the cause of death will be reached after further toxicological, pathological, and microbiological analyses of samples, a process expected to take several weeks.

The opening of the trial marks a critical step towards understanding the full circumstances surrounding the Böcek family's deaths and delivering justice for the victims and their grieving relatives. With the defendants making their initial defense statements, the legal proceedings in Istanbul are poised to shed light on how a family's dream vacation ended in such profound sorrow, and what measures will be taken to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
