At Least 27 Killed in Dominican Republic Nightclub Roof Collapse

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic – A devastating roof collapse at the Jet Set nightclub in Santo Domingo early Tuesday morning has left at least 27 people dead and more than 100 injured, according to authorities. Rescue crews are continuing to search the rubble for potential survivors, raising concerns that the death toll may yet increase.
The incident occurred at the popular nightclub, a well-known venue in the Dominican capital often frequented by politicians, athletes, and other prominent figures. The club was hosting a merengue concert when, without warning, the roof caved in, trapping scores of patrons beneath the debris.
Juan Manuel Méndez, director of the Center of Emergency Operations, confirmed the casualties and the ongoing rescue efforts. "We presume that many of them are still alive, and that is why the authorities here will not give up until not a single person remains under that rubble," Méndez stated.
The collapse occurred approximately one hour after the concert began, around 1 a.m. local time. Witnesses described a scene of chaos and panic as the roof gave way, sending concrete and debris crashing down onto the crowd.
Among the victims was Nelsy Cruz, the governor of the northwestern province of Montecristi and sister of seven-time Major League Baseball All-Star Nelson Cruz. Several other notable figures were injured, including former MLB pitcher Octavio Dotel, legislator Bray Vargas, and merengue singer Rubby Pérez, who was performing at the time of the collapse.
Enrique Paulino, Rubby Pérez's manager, recounted the harrowing experience. His shirt stained with blood, Paulino told reporters that the roof collapsed suddenly, killing the group's saxophonist. "It happened so quickly. I managed to throw myself into a corner," he said, adding that he initially believed an earthquake had struck.
Rescue workers are facing a challenging task as they navigate the unstable wreckage. Firefighters are using saws and drills to cut through concrete and wood, carefully removing debris in the hope of finding more survivors. Nearly 12 hours after the collapse, rescue teams were still pulling people from the rubble.
Hospitals in Santo Domingo are overwhelmed with the injured. At one hospital, an official read aloud the names of survivors as anxious crowds gathered, desperately seeking information about their loved ones.
President Luis Abinader addressed the nation via social media, expressing his condolences and assuring the public that all rescue agencies were "working tirelessly" to assist those affected. "We deeply regret the tragedy that occurred at the Jet Set nightclub. We have been following the incident minute by minute since it occurred," he wrote.
The cause of the roof collapse remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet released any preliminary findings, but structural failure is suspected. Questions are being raised about the building's safety and whether it met required building codes.
The Jet Set nightclub is a one-story structure that has been a fixture in Santo Domingo's nightlife scene for many years. Its popularity has made it a regular gathering place for people from all walks of life.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves throughout the Dominican Republic, with many expressing grief and solidarity with the victims and their families. The government has declared a period of national mourning, and flags are flying at half-staff across the country.
As the rescue efforts continue and the investigation into the cause of the collapse gets underway, the focus remains on providing support to the victims and their families. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of building safety and the need for rigorous enforcement of building codes to prevent such tragedies from happening again. The Dominican Republic is grappling with the aftermath of this devastating event, as the nation mourns the loss of life and searches for answers.
