Russian Missile Strike Kills Dozens in Sumy on Palm Sunday

SUMY, Ukraine — A Russian missile strike on the heart of Sumy, a city in northeastern Ukraine, killed at least 21 people and wounded scores more on Sunday, Ukrainian officials said. The attack occurred as local residents were observing Palm Sunday, a significant religious holiday.
The acting mayor of Sumy, Artem Kobzar, announced the devastating news via social media, stating, "On this bright Palm Sunday, our community has suffered a terrible tragedy." He confirmed that the death toll had surpassed 20 and was expected to rise as rescue efforts continued.
The missile strike, believed to have involved two ballistic missiles, struck a central area of the city. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack, emphasizing the timing of the strike on a day of religious observance. "Russia hit the center of Sumy on the day when people go to church – Palm Sunday, the feast of the Lord's Entry into Jerusalem," Zelenskyy stated. He urged international allies to increase pressure on Russia to bring an end to the ongoing conflict.
Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that at least 83 people were wounded in the attack. Emergency services are on the scene, working to clear debris and assist survivors. Al Jazeera reported that emergency workers who arrived at the scene of the first attack were injured in a second strike.
Oleksandr Lysenko, the mayor of Sumy, expressed his grief and anger in a Telegram post, vowing retribution for the attack. "So much heartbreak. Russian ballistic missiles are killing civilians in my city," he wrote. "There will be retribution for everything."
The Sumy region, which borders Russia, has been a frequent target of Russian attacks since the beginning of the war. While Russian forces withdrew from the region in April 2022, the area remains vulnerable to missile and artillery strikes.
The attack on Sumy comes amid heightened tensions between Russia and Ukraine, with both sides accusing each other of escalating attacks on civilian infrastructure. Recent reports suggest that a tentative US-brokered deal to pause strikes on energy infrastructure may have been violated, further complicating efforts to de-escalate the conflict.
The international community has widely condemned the attack on Sumy, with many countries reiterating their support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Calls for increased sanctions and other measures to hold Russia accountable for its actions are growing.
The Palm Sunday attack in Sumy serves as a stark reminder of the human cost of the ongoing war in Ukraine. As the conflict enters its third year, the need for a peaceful resolution becomes ever more urgent. The loss of life and the destruction of communities underscore the devastating impact of the war on the Ukrainian people.
